May Day Car/Bike Rally: Social Justice During Social Distancing

Facebook event HERE

Break out of isolation! Rally responsibly this May Day (May 1)! Defend the rights of workers, the unemployed and poor communities! Get on your bike or in your car and bang your pots for a People's Response to the Pandemic!

WHEN?
May 1 (May Day, or International Workers’ Day) @ 5 pm

WHO?
Ithaca Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), along with working people, progressive local organizations and community members. (Please show up wearing gloves and masks.)

WHY?
We will not sacrifice ourselves for the comfort of the bosses!

The COVID-19 crisis has revealed an economy and government that benefit the 1%, leaving the majority facing job loss, inadequate healthcare, and social spending cuts.

Rather than step in to ensure our livelihoods and safety, the government is bailing out corporations with trillions of dollars while throwing crumbs at working and poor families.

TODAY we face…

*an economy that puts profits over people…
*a pandemic that ravages our neglected communities and defunded hospitals…
*a totally inadequate government response.

DETAILS:
We will gather this Friday, May 1 @ 4:30 pm at the KOHL's Parking Lot off Route 13/Elmira Rd.

*Bring pots and pans to bang on and red flags to wave!

Just after 5pm, we will travel by car or bike up Route 13, continue on Meadow St, cut through Hancock toward Cayuga, and head back down to the Commons.

*Please travel no faster than 5 miles an hour.

*Honk and display signs (on cars or bikes) that read “Cancel the Rent!” “Housing is a Human Right!” “Medicare for All NOW!” “Protect Workers and Our Families!” “Humanity Over Profit!” “Honk for Justice!” “Detention in a Pandemic is Cruel and Unfair!”, Etc.

We will end with a pot-banging rally in the downtown area (keeping our masks on and our distance from one another).

DEMANDS:
We need more than stingy, short-term relief policies. We need meaningful aid and a permanent shift to a sustainable and humane economy.

We demand that local, state and federal officials:

*Enact an Unconditional Rent Freeze
(forgive all rent until August or for the duration of the crisis—an eviction moratorium is not enough!)
*Provide Permanent Medicare for ALL
*Guarantee Protection and Paid Sick and Family Leave for ALL Essential Workers
*Provide a Guaranteed, Dignified Income for ALL
(until together we rebuild an economy that works for everyone and for the planet)
*Release ALL those Trapped Behind Bars
(we will not let jails, prisons and ICE detention centers become COVID-19 hotbeds)

Our economy should work to meet our individual and community needs, not multiply the wealth of greedy corporations. Our government should protect us and guarantee the services we deserve, not abandon us while billionaires rake in profits.

HISTORY:
Why are we protesting on May 1? May 1 is May Day, or International Workers’ Day, a traditional celebration of working people and our struggle for rights and empowerment.

A car/bike protest is both safe and historical: for generations working people have used caravans of vehicles to dramatize their causes. Car protests have recently occurred in several U.S. cities. A socially-distanced group of bicyclists will add to our visibility!

Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick outlines plan to reduce City’s operating budget by $5.4 million in response to COVID-19. Full video with written text here. Ithaca Voice coverage here.

GIAC Announces A Temporary Set-Back For A Strong Comeback.

At GIAC we are proud of our culture of love, family, resiliency, and strong relationships with our staff, participants, families and community. Like many of you, the City of Ithaca and GIAC are currently experiencing great challenges due to the financial impact the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has had on our nation, state and local community. We know these past weeks have been filled with stress, challenges, isolation, and financial difficulties.

However, through these unprecedented times there have been examples of the community supporting one another. From setting up online programming and senior grocery services to mask making, collaborating on a food pantry at GIAC, and staff making phone calls to check on GIAC families, we have provided support.

City of Ithaca and GIAC leadership are looking forward to how our community rebounds after the outbreak subsides and we can return to offering a safe environment for our participants. At this time, no government stimulus funds have been provided for municipalities including the City of Ithaca to recoup lost revenues and costs of the pandemic. The City will experience a budgetary shortfall estimated to be in the millions for this budget year, thus, difficult decisions and changes have had to be made. With the Governor’s Executive Orders to close schools, temporarily reduce workforce, and put New York on pause, coupled with social distancing requirements, we have had to close all physical programs at GIAC. Add to that the projected financial shortfall, and GIAC along with other city departments and community agencies have to endure further difficult changes. These changes will affect our staff, participants, programs and services through the summer months but will position us to come back stronger after the pandemic.

• Most of GIAC’s employees will not be working after May 1 for a few months.

• All GIAC youth and teen programs will continue to be closed at least through August.

• There will be no summer programs, which include Rashad Richardson Basketball League, Summer Camp, Boxing, Conservation Corp, Teen Employment, and the Alex Haley Municipal Pool will not open for the season.

• Current online youth/teen programming will end on May 1.

• GIAC administration will continue to offer the Virtual Family Fun@Home Challenge Activities through postings on GIAC’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ithacagiac.

• The Hospitality Employment Training Program will continue to stay open for now through online outreach.

• Senior Program staff will continue to provide support and basic program/services to our vulnerable seniors.

• GIAC will continue to accept applications for the Robin’s Fund electronically.

• The Food Pantry at GIAC on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 -4 pm will remain available outside of GIAC.

• GIAC will continue to provide business services, 10am-4pm, Monday - Friday via telephone and email with the main office number (607) 272-3622 and via email at giacmain@cityofithaca.org.

• The GIAC building will continue to be closed to the public.
Once a decision is made regarding the 2020-21 After School Program, GIAC staff will be in touch with families.

Stay strong and be well,

Leslyn McBean-Clairborne, GIAC Director
Travis Brooks, Deputy GIAC Director
Kerry Phillips, Deputy GIAC Director

Governor Cuomo Announces Creation of New York Forward Re-Opening Advisory Board

Confirms 3,110 Additional Coronavirus Cases in New York State - Bringing Statewide Total to 295,106; New Cases in 44 Counties

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today outlined additional guidelines for the phased plan to re-open New York on a regional basis. Each region of the state - Capital Region, Central New York, Finger Lakes, Mid-Hudson Valley, Mohawk Valley, New York City, North Country, Long Island, Southern Tier and Western New York - must follow these guidelines as part of the re-opening plan.

  1. CDC Guidelines: Based on CDC recommendations, once a region experiences a 14-day decline in the hospitalization rate they may begin a phased re-opening.

  2. Industries: Businesses in each region will re-open in phases. Phase one will include opening construction and manufacturing functions with low risk. Phase two will open certain industries based on priority and risk level. Businesses considered "more essential" with inherent low risks of infection in the workplace and to customers will be prioritized, followed by other businesses considered "less essential" or those that present a higher risk of infection spread. Regions must not open attractions or businesses that would draw a large number of visitors from outside the local area.

  3. Business Precautions: Each business and industry must have a plan to protect employees and consumers, make the physical work space safer and implement processes that lower risk of infection in the business.

  4. Building Health Care Capacity: To maintain the phased re-opening plan, each region must have at least 30 percent of hospital beds and ICU beds available after elective surgeries resume.

  5. Testing Regimen: Regions must implement a testing regimen that prioritizes symptomatic persons and individuals who came into contact with a known COVID-positive person, and conducts frequent tests of frontline and essential workers. Regions must maintain an appropriate number of testing sites to accommodate its population and must fully advertise where and how people can get tested. The region must also use the collected data to track and trace the spread of the virus.

  6. Tracing System: There must be at least 30 contact tracers for every 100,000 people. The region must also monitor the regional infection rate throughout the re-opening plan.

  7. Isolation Facilities: Regions must present plans to have rooms available for people who test positive for COVID-19 and who cannot self-isolate.

  8. Regional Coordination: Regions must coordinate the re-opening of schools, transportation systems, testing and tracing with other surrounding regions.

  9. Re-imagining Tele-Medicine

  10. Re-imagining Tele-Education

  11. Regional Control Rooms: Each region must appoint an oversight institution as its control room to monitor regional indicators during the phased re-opening, including hospital capacity, rate of infection, PPE burn rate and businesses.

  12. Protect and Respect Essential Workers: Regions must continue to ensure protections are in place for essential workers.

COVID-19 TESTING CRITERIA EXPANDED TO INCLUDE ESSENTIAL WORKERS

(Ithaca, NY – April 26, 2020) - This weekend, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that testing for COVID-19 will be made available for essential workers. This is in addition to individuals who should seek testing because they are symptomatic or have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

Public Health Director Frank Kruppa said, “As many essential workers are still interacting directly with the public, increased testing is vital to stopping the spread of COVID-19. This increased testing will allow us to identify positive cases, and reduce potential exposures.” Kruppa continued, “Essential workers have been on the front line responding to this crisis, I want to thank all of the essential workers in Tompkins County who are continuing to serve our community during this difficult time.”

Who should get tested?

  • A list of essential workers is defined and frequently updated by New York State and can be found here(https://esd.ny.gov/guidance-executive-order-2026).

  • Anyone who is symptomatic or came in close contact with a positive case (regardless of essential worker status) is still encouraged to seek testing.

Where and when to get tested?

  • Testing for COVID-19 is available at the Cayuga Health Sampling Site located at The Shops at Ithaca Mall parking lot, 40 Catherwood Rd., between the hours of 10am-3pm Monday through Friday.

  • Pre-register online at cayugahealth.org/ or through the Call Center, 607-319-5708, between the hours of 8am-5pm Monday through Friday.

  • Sampling is to determine if you currently have COVID-19; this is not the antibody test.

What should you do after testing?

  • If you do not have symptoms, continue to work and follow social distancing guidance, wear a face covering, and wash your hands well and often.

  • You will be contacted with results as soon as they are available.

What does your test result mean?

  • If your test result is positive, you will be contacted by a Community Health Nurse who will conduct a contact investigation and provide instructions about self-isolation. See full guidance here.

How do essential businesses, nonprofits, or government operations obtain masks?

  • Businesses and organizations deemed essential can make requests through this form for cloth masks and hand sanitizer for their employees.

  • Guidance on the use of masks can be found here.

The Cayuga Health Sampling Site is open Monday–Friday, 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. To pre-register, call Cayuga Health Registration Line at 607-319-5708, or go online to cayugahealthsystem.org.

Ithaca, waiting on federal aid, announces employee layoffs in response to COVID-19
City of Ithaca employees learned in an all-staff email Thursday morning that layoffs would be coming after the most recent federal stimulus bill failed to include funding for municipalities. Ithaca's and Tompkins County's economy is heavily reliant on students and their families, as well as tourism, to generate the local sales tax that, along with property taxes, funds annual budgets. Those revenue streams are expected to dry up, and the city expects to take a serious financial hit from the COVID-19 shutdown, but it's not yet clear how hard that hit will be. Learn more here.

New Resources for Food Delivery and Safe Rides to Covid-19 Testing: Local residents have new options for food delivery and transportation to the Cayuga Health Sampling Site due to recent actions taken by a group of transportation service providers and partner agencies including United Way of Tompkins County, Food Bank of the Southern Tier, Human Services Coalition, Tompkins County Health Department, TCAT, Center for Community Transportation and Way2Go.

Free and safe rides in a sanitized vehicle now are available for individuals scheduled for COVID-19 testing  at the Cayuga Health Sampling Site located at The Shops at Ithaca Mall.  Individuals first must register for testing online at or by calling 607-319-5708, then call 2-1-1 between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm to schedule a ride with ASAP cab company. There is no charge for this service.

For emergency or regular food delivery, individuals should call 2-1-1 between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm for assistance. Emergency food requests will be directed to the United Way of Tompkins County which is organizing deliveries from the food hub via Gadabout.

To support these efforts, individuals may volunteer to deliver goods by bicycle, and can be set up with a bike delivery rig if one is needed. More information is available here.

Way2Go is a program of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County that works to keep the Tompkins County community informed of the various transportation changes and emerging solutions arising in response to COVID-19. Visit Way2Go.org for news and updates. We ask that you do your part to share this information with your staff, clients and neighbors to ensure anyone in need has access to these resources.

30th anniversary Grassroots Festival postponed to July 2021

Organizers of Grassroots Festival have announced that the 30th-anniversary installment of the festival, set for this summer, will be pushed off to 2021 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rumors swirled Tuesday evening after an email went out to vendors registered for this year's festival informing them of the changes, though the announcement had not been made to ticket holders or the public yet. A request for comment Wednesday morning directed the Ithaca Voice to the festival's website, where a video message and letter were posted making the announcement. Read more here.

Updates from Governor Cuomo:

A new nation-leading COVID-19 contact tracing program to control the rate of infection of the virus. This program will help us control the infection rate of Coronavirus and will be executed in coordination with New Jersey and Connecticut. It will serve as an important resource to gather data and be a model to replicate across the country. Bloomberg Philanthropies is committing $10.5 million, along with organizational support and technical assistance, to help build and execute this new program, and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health will build an online curriculum and training program for contact tracers. This program will be crucial as we start our work to safely reopen our economy. I thank former Mayor Michael Bloomberg for this exciting partnership.

While New York is on PAUSE, families of public employees won't need to wait to access retirement benefits. A recently signed Executive Order waives the 15-day waiting period. This allows families who may lose a relative to Coronavirus to receive these benefits sooner.

The New York State Department of Financial Services announced new measures to help hospitals. DFS will direct health insurers to provide financial and administrative relief to New York State hospitals in response to COVID-19. Health insurers will be required to immediately pay out claims to hospitals and to work with the neediest hospitals to provide additional financial assistance. That means hospitals can focus more on life-saving medical care.

The NY National Guard Civil Support Team is helping test medical workers for COVID-19. The 22 Soldiers and Airmen on the team are trained to detect the presence of biological, chemical and radiological hazards using a sophisticated mobile laboratory. They have adapted this technology to run COVID-19 tests, and are now testing on-site medical workers stationed at the Javits Center, which has been used as an overflow facility for COVID patients.

The State's antibody testing survey results will be announced in a few days. Earlier this week, New York began administering the survey in supermarkets and other locations statewide. The results of the random testing will show us for the first time what percentage of the population has actually had the virus and will help us to reopen and rebuild without jeopardizing what we've already accomplished.

Social Persistencing: DJ-Thon Fundraisers

Dear Ithaca, Tompkins County, and our neighboring communities:

We the DJs... your friendly neighborhood party-starters, fun-makers, and help-you-relieve-stress-through-shaking-your-booty-ers... miss you. This is obviously a stressful time for us all, and while the true heroes among us (medical workers, first responders, and more) are performing herculean feats on a daily basis, most people have been sitting at home and wishing they could be helping more. SO LET'S!

Beginning at 6pm Sunday April 5th, 2020, the Ithaca DJ Festival will be hosting an ongoing series of live-streaming DJ-thons to raise money for various local initiatives who are in need during this challenging time. Each DJ-thon will be 6 hours long and feature 3 local DJs, each spinning 2 hours of music to get you grooving. We’ll have a video chat room set up so you can show off your social disDancing! These events will be family friendly for the most part (but we won’t be censoring lyrics, fyi).

The DJ schedule, including fundraising goals and donation instructions are at ithacadjfestival.com

Mask Making

In an effort to distribute cloth masks to every essential worker in the county, the Tompkins County Health Department is asking for volunteers to make masks.

  • The health department is seeking volunteers who:

    • Have sewing experience, although some people without sewing experience can help by cutting materials and supporting the sewers

    • Can provide a sewing machine for use at the production facility (not required)

    • Have not been in close contact with an individual who tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 14 days.

If you are able to volunteer in this mask-making effort, you are asked to email masks@tompkins-co.org.

The health department says essential businesses can request masks for their employees through the Tompkins County Emergency Operations Center.

How to Make a Face Mask

    What you will need

Cotton fabric-double layer, 400 count cotton or 140 count muslin

    Rope elastic, beading cord elastic,

or 34” fabric ties will work (you may also use⅛” flat elastic)

    OPTIONAL: Medium-weight pellon interfacing

  • Put right sides of cotton fabric together; fabric design should be horizontal.

    • Cut 8”x8” or 9”x6”2.

  • Starting at the center of the bottom edge, sew to the first corner, stop. Sew the elastic/fabric tie with the edge out into the corner. A few stitches forward and back will hold this.

  •  Sew to the next corner, stop, and bring the other end of the same elastic/fabric tie to the corner and sew a few stitches forward and back.

  • Now sew across that top of the mask to the next corner.. Again put an elastic/fabric tie with the edge out.

  • Sew to the next corner and sew in the other end of the same elastic/fabric tie.6. Sew across the bottom leaving about 1.5” to 2” open. Stop, cut the thread.T urn inside out.

  • Pin 3 tucks on each side of the mask. Make sure the tucks are the same direction.

  • Sew around the edge of the mask twice.

It is so easy to make this. As a special touch, please feel free to include a special message to bless our individuals as they step into the front line to serve the community.

An awareness campaign encourages low-income New Yorkers to claim their Economic Impact Payments under the CARES Act.

New York State has confirmed 7,090 additional cases of novel coronavirus, bringing the statewide total to 236,732 confirmed cases in NY.

Many marriage bureaus have temporarily closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, preventing New Yorkers from getting a marriage license during the current health emergency; the Executive Order will temporarily suspend a provision of law that requires in-person visits.

Masks

Tompkins Mask Makers - now has a website. At Tompkins Mask Makers we’re connecting individuals and local businesses with local non-medical mask providers to encourage local commerce and mask production.

Request hand sanitizer and masks for businesses. If you are a business that needs hand sanitizer or homemade fabric masks, please contact Jennifer Tavares of the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce at jtavares@tompkinschamber.org. Be sure to indicate how many essential employees you're seeking masks for (and for what purpose/responsibilities), and how many gallons of hand sanitizer you would be interested in receiving in the next week or two. While they cannot make guarantees, they will do their best to accommodate requests.

Food

Food Pantry Pods - Mutual Aid Tompkins has carpenters ready to build neighborhood open food pantries, to be placed in accessible areas in neighborhoods around the county. The first of these pantries has been placed in Ithaca's Northside neighborhood across from the Permaculture Park.

These pantries will be regularly stocked with non-perishable foods and other essential items by volunteers. These goods are available to all, no questions asked. Click here to download the schematics for the food pantry. Suggested materials and resources here.

Over a month ago, on March 13, a State of Emergency was declared in Tompkins County — shuttering schools and businesses, all in the effort of slowing the spread of COVID-19 so that medical professionals can meet the challenge of dealing with a novel disease without having to deal with unprecedented demand for medical care. While an emergency declaration stole the headlines, it was followed by the creation of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Pets

SPCA of Tompkins County Free Pet Food: Wednesday April 15th, between 10 and 11 AM. Our wonderful community has been supporting us with generous donations of pet food, and we want to pass some of it on to folks who are struggling to feed their pets right now. Special thanks to the wonderful people donating dry cat food for the pantry, so we now have enough to share! If you need pet food, please come to our Intake Building parking lot (the shorter of our two buildings). Wait in your car, roll down a window, and staff will bring food to you. We want to minimize our human-to-human contact, for everyone’s safety! This event is for dog, cat, and small mammal (rat, guinea pig, mouse, rabbit, etc.) food only, other supplies will not be available, but keep your eye on our page for additional upcoming food pantry events. No reservations are required for this event. **If you, or anyone in your household is sick, has been tested for Covid-19, or are under observation because of exposure to the virus, please DO NOT come yourself! Instead, ask a friend or family member to come pick up food and drop it off on your doorstep. We want everyone to stay safe and healthy.**

Has anyone applied for the SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan and either heard anything back or gotten money? I applied two weeks ago, confirmation number at the end of the application but haven't heard anything at all, not even an email.

  • I have not heard of any of the emergency advances going out either. I bet that they are using their manpower to move the PPP money first and then the EIDL. In most cases you CAN apply for both. There has been misleading info about that. The PPP money has been moving through the SBA and banks will close and disburse that money.

  • We applied on 3/30 and have heard nothing from the SBA. I have read various places that none of the emergency advances have been dispersed.

Local

Tracking

This is a helpful resource built by local resident Marty Hiller (it takes a few seconds to load). She has graphed all the data we have been getting from TC and for Cortland. You can see the classic exponential curve we would expect to see in an infectious disease outbreak with a predictive continued curve had we had no intervention. Mapped on the same graph is the observed curve of spread with the interventions that we as a community have taken.
